Akosombo Flood Relief — Volta Region

Akosombo dam spillage survivors
HighIn October 2023, controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams — needed to prevent a catastrophic dam failure — flooded low-lying communities along the Volta River, hitting the North and Central Tongu districts hardest. Around 35,000 people lost their homes, farms and belongings, and families resettled beside stagnant water faced a heightened risk of malaria and disease. Relief efforts, coordinated with NADMO and the Ghana Red Cross, provided shelter, food, clean water and treated mosquito nets. Contributions support relief and basic health care for families still recovering.
